you have 0 items in your cart
If your category count on your main page doesn't make any sense - read ahead!

Ok... so you have some inventory in there now. Let's say you have 10 items. But when you go into your store front you see that you have 13 items.  And even stranger, you see that one category has 2 items listed - you click on that category and see 1 item pop up.  Then you click on your subcategory under that item and see 1 item pop up.  How did that happen???

Step 1: Go into your inventory item itself by clicking on catalog>manage products.

Step 2: Click on the inventory item itself you want to look at.

Step 3:  Look at the category boxes.

If your item on fits into one subcategory - only add it into 1 subcategory. The item count will automatically be picked up at the category level.  If you put it into the subcategory level and the main category level it fits into the system will now count it twice.  If putting it into a category  (or subcategory) once is good, putting it into the category or subcategory twice must be better right? wrong!  It will cause it double count your item on your front page.

By following these simple rules of thumb your item count on the front page will stay correct.
